During the job interview



Once you have been practicing for the interview, now is time to demonstrate it all. This next and most basic step is about getting noticed, which behaviour establishes the difference between new workers and the unemployed.

  • STRATEGIES:
  • During your job interview there are little details you should focus on and take care about. Separately of your enthusiasm, pleasure and determination, these details are often called strategies being even more important that your job qualifications.
PUNCTUALITY:
  • Arrive early.
  • Do not give a negative impression by getting late.
  • Be at least 15 minutes before your interview time.
  • Utilise those 15 minutes in remembering tips but also relaxing.
  • Call as soon as possible, before the scheduled time, if something unexpected happened.
  • Ask for another time and opportunity if you could not get interviewed.
  • Be apologetic and courteous explaining the trouble reasons that caused your unpunctuality.

GREETING:
  • Start your introduction with a memorable greeting.
  • Greet everyone you are introduced to, by smiling, making eye contact, shaking hands, and saying their names if it is possible.
  • Show genuine smiles, using some teeth maybe.
  • Keep in mind to always make eye contact throughout the interview process in order to not create the wrong impression of hiding something or not being honest.
  • Be polite and shake hands properly, whether they have extended theirs or not.
  • Hold some tissue to wipe your hands unobtrusively before shaking hands.
  • Use the same strength of your grip to theirs.
  • Say the person’s name loud adding polite phrases and showing that you are paying attention.
  • Make a positive first impression.

BODY LANGUAGE:
  • Demonstrate confidence and control, just like you would be greeting a good friend.
  • Sit comfortably and properly at the moment and place the interviewer(s) indicate.
  • Keep a good posture and look attentive.
  • Face the person who is asking the question with full eye contact to everyone in the room when you are answering.
  • Do not forget to smile.

PERSONALITY:
  • Show your personality but do not over do it.
  • Match your behaviour to the interviewers.
  • Demonstrate sincerity and properly sense of humour if it would be necessary.
  • Present yourself as someone who is a pleasure to work with, but at the same time, as a serious professional.
  • Do not ever show arrogance.

ANSWERING:
  • Provide clear, confident and concrete answers.
  • Do not doubt when speaking.
  • Use too quiet too hard voice, so that the interviewer does not ask you to repeat your answers.
  • Give enough detail and avoid rambling.
  • Focus on the answer point; most interviews use a limit time to 20 minutes or less.
  • Ask for giving more details to the interviewers, if it would be necessary.

QUESTIONING:
  • Use those questions you have been preparing before the interview.
  • Clear your doubts up about job position, hiring process, etc.
  • Comment finally about how glad you would be if they give you the opportunity.

EXIT:
  • Pay attention when the interview is over.
  • Dispense your letters of recommendation and any other relevant document.
  • Thank the interviewers and shake their hands again.
  • Use their names if you remember them.
  • KEY CONCERNS:
  • There are also some other concerns you should consider as the last step for the job position.
YOURSELF:
  • Focus on the product (yourself) making understand the interviewer what you have to offer.
  • Do not wait for the interviewer to make whole the questions.
  • Mention your best skills and qualities, after and/or during you are answering to a question.
  • Get your entrance based on an agenda.
  • Have cleared your key selling points thinking when and how to get them during the interview.
  • Control the content of the interview allowing the interviewers to control the process.
  • Use relevant experiences when giving answers with examples.

YOUR AUDIENCE:
  • Know about the company and its needs as much as you can.
  • Research carefully the company.
  • Look for your relevant and important information that the company would be interested on.

YOUR ABILITIES:
  • Show enthusiasm and interest are vital for sitting one step closer to the job position.
  • Remember to present those jobs that you are truly interested on.
  • Focus on your deeper interests in order to be truly excited about the job and interview.

YOUR ATTENTION:
  • Pay attention to the interviewer(s) so that they do not imagine you cannot listen well to future co-workers and managers.
  • Pause the interview and clarify your doubts before you could not remember them later.
  • Do not be afraid to ask the interviewer to restate the question.
  • Act normally even when the interviewers made you a stumped question.

YOUR DIFFERENCES:
  • Anticipate your answers setting yourself apart from other applicants.
  • Demonstrate qualities describing them in detail.
  • Use public speaking principles, including tone variance, voice tempo, nervous into enthusiasm, eye contact, etc.
  • Try to get the interviewer's energy level.
