How to write a cover letter



Frequently, writing a cover letter is an intimidating task to start, besides of most people have no idea where to start. However, here you will find how to do it by simply following our advices one step at a time; then, you will notice the expert you became writing your own letter to attach in your resume.

Writing a cover letter is not only about following a format; instead, there are three general issues you should consider in order to be effective:

Why are you writing?:

  • Maybe you are writing a prospecting letter. If so that, remember it is an unsolicited letter in which you are exploring about possible job openings and you need to enunciate your specific job objective to capture the attention of the reader.
  • It might be you are writing a networking letter asking for information necessary to your resume. If so that, make sure to write a clear request.
  • There would be also that you are responding to a job posting. If so that, include both how you knew about that position and the title of the position. As well, it is also important to demonstrate your enthusiasm, credentials and qualifications for the position.
  • Perhaps you have been introduced to the employer by some friend or relative. If so that, do not forget to mention it, by name, in your cover letter in order to instil interest on you by the reader.

What do you have to offer?:

  • If you are writing a prospective letter, do not be shy to express your potential to satisfy the requirements of the company; and forget be focussed on the employer’s offers.
  • If you are responding to an advertisement, make sure to write specifically about your qualifications, abilities and experiences related to the position and how they fulfil the employer’s expectations.
  • Whatever the letter you are writing, remember to give evidence that you have been researching about the organization, show you have their required skills, and denote how your education and work skills are transferable.

How will you follow it up?:

  • At the conclusion section reiterates your interest in the job, as same as establishing clearly how the employer can reach you by phone and/or email.
  • Some applicants also rather request directly for the job interview including in the message that they will call to arrange for an appointment.
  • However, some companies and employers explicitly prohibit phone calls. If this is not your case, give your best to reach the organization confirming that they received your application and it is complete.
  • There would be that you applied from outside the geographic area of the employer or company; so that, include clearly your time permanence in town.
  • In addition, if you have references documents; you should indicate that you are available on request.
